I wanted to write this today to inform you all of some great extracurricular activities happening that your children could participate in!
The first is the ESS Art contest. For this contest the participants create a art piece representing "what would it be like to have a class in outer space?" Due date is on April 8th and any info can be found here, https://library.ess.com/artcontest If your child is participating in any of these all they need to so is get me the art piece and any other information before Friday the 8th and I will handle the rest! If getting me the physical art piece is tricky feel free to send me a photo of it with the necessary info and I will work my magic. The second is the Ingham Students Art Exhibit. This one I can only take 20 students, and the due date is this one is also the 8th of Feb., but unlike the other I need the physical art piece. If your child would like to enter have them bring the art piece and accompanying paperwork to me and I will enter it in! Follow the link for more information, http://lansingartgallery.org/17th-annual-ingham-art-exhibit/ For both art shows I will be talking to some students and pulling some of their art, so spots will fill up fast! The third and final is our Figure Study Class help up at the High School. This runs every Tuesday, weather and snow day permitting, and our first class will be this Tuesday, Feb. 5th. I have also attached the following paperwork needed to attend the class, please bring it to our first class if you are joining us for this amazing experience! Thanks and if you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel to contact me: Mr. Gere Due to the weather conditions we are canceling figure study for the night. But worry not! We will still have our full amount of classes, everything will just be pushed back one week.
I also want to take this moment to mention that if we are having extremely bad weather, please contact me to see if class is still happening. In the event of us having a snow day on a figure study night we will not have class that night and will be pushing it back one week. Be safe and have a great night! Mr. Gere PS: If you know someone who was going to attend tonight please pass the word along that there is no class tonight, we are in a unfortunate circumstance that I have a limited email list being we have not had the first night, so some that might have planed on showing up might not have contacted me yet, thus I have no way of informing them of the cancellation. Grand Rapids Art Prize just ended this weekend and what a year! There were some amazing art pieces spread out around the wonderful city of Grand Rapids. If you have never heard of Art Prize, it is a city wide art show where artists from all around the world enter in a piece to compete for a fame and fortune! Check out HERE to read more about it.
This years winners can be viewed and read about HERE. 40 middle school and high school students enjoyed a day of viewing art at The Broad Museum, The Kresge Art Center, The Mackerel Sky Gallery, The Saper Gallery and The Lansing Art Gallery. They were respectful and attentive and walked away with a better understanding of how artists use a variety of media to express themselves. They also learned how to submit artwork to galleries and about funding public museums.
While at the broad we got to see a traveling display of Andy Warhol art, ranging from prints to photos. Students got a chance to pick quotes, choose an art piece they thought best embodied it, then explain to the group why they choose that specific art piece. Along with that we got a chance to see art, science and math meet on one art piece where it was a robot with a pen and you could use a phone number to text it directions like up, down, left, and right. Then we visited the Kresge School of Art on MSU's campus where we got a tour of the art department as well as a peek at the undergraduate and graduate work currently on display. Students got a chance to learn about some of the things art students create and the artists choices and how the school supports them! From there we visited some of the art galleries off of MSU's campus and where some groups got a chance to not only see local artists work but even talk with them and see their work space where they create some of the art available in the gallery. Form there we went downtown to the capital and ended with the Lansing Art Gallery, where the students got to see other student artists who entered and got into the very prestigious Art Scholarship Alert, where participants earn not only publicity of their art but also money for supplies and school! There were some Williamston student artists there as well as the main winner who was a participant of our Figure Study Class. This whole thing would have not been possible without a grant from Michigan Youth Arts, who provided funding for us to see this all without having it cost anything to the students or school! It was a great time, and if you were unable to attend keep an eye out for the announcement next year, 2019! This year Helping Hands charity reached out to the Williamston Visual Arts program about creating some cards for people who could use them. We participated and created some great cards with positive messages. Look at the images below of some of those said cards.
Tonight the first ever Fine Arts Festival. This festival combines all the arts together for the first time! Tonight there will be a concert where attendees will hear the various choirs and bands perform. There will also be a unveiling of the winner and honorable mentions of the Susan Lorenz Memorial Art Show as well as celebrating all the participants. The night will start at 6 and end at 8pm. The performances will be held in the new gym at the High School while the art show will be, and is currently, on display in the old gym. This year marks the 35th Susan Lorenz Memorial Art Show, we had some talented artists participate this year! This years first place winner is Jasmyne Bush, check out the piece below! The 10 Honorable Mentions are Eva Gray, Aliana Hermann-Campana, Kenzie Carson, Charles Herek, Emma Reynolds, Amelia Keyes, Benjamin Krueger, Paige Lewis, Eva Hudson, and Allison Peplowski. Check out their pieces below! The Art Show will be on display in the old gym today, Monday, during the day and for the concert tonight, but will then be on display in the new gym from Tuesday until Wednesday, so if you can not attend tonight feel free to come by and see the art at your leisure. This being said we hope that you can find time to join us all tonight and celebrate Williamston thriving art community! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me. ALSO if you aer still interested in attending the FIELD TRIP this Friday please make sure to get in your paper permission slips ASAP, by Wednesday at the latest. As I said to the large amount of people who emailed back right away upon its announcement, I can only take paper permission slips and not email confirmations out of fairness. So if your child want's to attend get it to me QUICK, there are VERY FEW spots left! Last night concluded our last live drawing night for figure study this year, check out the photos below from our large animal night and the previous weeks night, motion night. Next week marks our last meeting, and the day will be dedicated to giving participants full access to the various mediums we used throughout the class and letting them use them to work on continuing and improving one of their pieces from previous nights. This year students entered a variety of art projects, like self-portraits done in watercolor, radial designs, and even a graffiti name paint project and a mixed media drawing of a crazy world! Out of all the entries judges pick 60 pieces to be professionally framed and displayed and exhibited for one year at their facility. Judges will contact schools with winners by late Feb. so keep an eye out for information on that and if we have any winners in our group!
